(2000) Bloodstone: Imperial Grade Shou Pu'er
Taste: Iron, Date, Plum
Energy: Sinking, Nourishing, Filling
Source: Lincang, Yunnan
Session Time: 1-2 hours
Imperial Grade Shou Pu'er is smaller leaf varietal, popularized as tribute tea to the Emperor. With smaller leaves comes more surface area, which means stronger steeps. This tea welcomes that though: Deep, hot, long steeps over 30 seconds per pot yields a richness that only a well-aged Pu'er can provide. An unexpected "lightness" of texture pervades on the mouthfeel. You're invited to revel in the cave-like fragrance that exudes from the pot, and to be lost in the immaculate deep-ruby liqueur.
The term "Petrichor" comes from the Greek (pétros) 'stone', and (ikhṓr), the ethereal blood of the gods in Greek mythology. It refers to the scent of forest floor after the rain, which is extremely detectable and favorable to humans. Well-aged shou Pu'er is coveted for this profile. This tea was named with this fragrance in mind, as well as the refined nature of the beautiful gemstone which, like this tea, glows when light shines through it.
